Looks like Need for Speed just wasn't fast enough to beat out Mr. Peabody and Sherman, as the animated adventure took first in the weekend box office with a surprising $21.2 million. Mr. Peabody and Sherman has earned a total of $63.2 million and is estimated to clear the $100 million mark.
Need for Speed was only able to grab 3rd place. loosing out to 300: Rise of an Empire, with $17.8 million. Making it the latest in a long list of failed video game adaptions.
"Need for Speed's crowd was overwhelmingly male (70 percent), and skewed a bit older (55 percent over the age of 25). 3D showings accounted for 43 percent of revenue. The audience gave the movie a "B+" CinemaScore, which suggests only so-so word-of-mouth. In the long-run, it's likely that Need for Speed slams on the breaks short of $50 million."
