News: Warner Bros, Acquire Rights to Minecraft

Brandon Hoyne

The beloved open-world video game may become a beloved motion picture. As Warner Bros. announced today that they have reached a deal that would allow them to create a movie based on Minecraft. Roy Lee, who produced the box office smash The Lego Movie, has already signed on to produce, along with Jill Messick.

Minecraft, developed by indie gaming company Mojang AB, is one of the top open-world type games, and has over 100 million users and has been downloaded on over 14.3 million PC's. The property seems to be a lock to follow in Lego's footsteps, but could just as easily fall into a Super Mario Bros. spiral

"In the Minecraft game, players create their own avatar and use cubes to create, build, and destroy structures and other forms across multiple game modes and various players. When you first begin the game, the player is dropped into the middle of nowhere and must build out a world of their own, but monsters can come out at any time and you must survive the night. According to GameSpot, the XBox version already has sold over 10 million copies. In terms of popularity, it now ranks up there with Tetris."
